Frequently Asked Questions

Why do students have to download a certificate?

  • Mayville School District is changing filtering companies. We currently have two companies that filter and monitor Internet access, and we wanted to move to one that does everything we need it to do. Our new company (Securly) requires users to download a security certificate.

  • Although the download will result in the best user experience, Mayville's wireless network users do not have to install the certificate to get filtered Internet access. If a user does not install the certificate,  the user may encounter a connection-not-private error while trying to access websites.

Why does Mayville School District filter Internet access?

  • The Children's Online Protection Act (CIPA) requires us to filter access minimally for materials that are "obscene, child pornography, or harmful to minors." Our eRate federal funding depends on us following CIPA.

Do I need to download the certificate on my Chromebook?

  • No, you do not need to download the certificate if you have a Chromebook. You will, however, have to login using your Mayville Google credentials. You will not be able to access the Internet through the Mayville wireless network if you do not login with your Google credentials.

Are Chromebooks filtered outside of school?

  • Yes, your Mayville Google account is monitored whether onsite of off site.
